Hi-Temp RTV Red Silicone
Hi-Temp RTV Red Silicone is famously used to make self healing injection ports on mushroom bags and jar lids. Simply squeeze a little out pulling upward to create an inverted cone, then take a piece of parchment or wax paper and press down until it spreads into the shape of a circle and make sure it’s 1/* in high so you have some silicone built up to reseal itself.
This Hi-Temp silicone is Red and can handle continuous temps of up to 550°F and intermittent temps up to 650°F. Most pressure cookers should never go over 259°F or 17.5 PSI. Always use micropore tape when using on a mushroom bag. Pre-Clean the bag with an alcohol pad or isopropyl alcohol. Place your piece of micropore tape over the bag where you want to place the SHIP (Self Healing Injection Port) and make a roughly 1″ tall cone straight up. Simply take your paper and press down on the cone until it’s about 1/8″ tall and let it sit for 24hrs to cure. Once done you can inoculate or pressure cook.

Silicones are used in many products. Ullmann’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry lists the following major categories of application: Electrical (e.g. insulation), electronics (e.g., coatings), household (e.g., sealants and cooking utensils), automobile (e.g. gaskets), airplane (e.g., seals), office machines (e.g. keyboard pads), medicine and dentistry (e.g. tooth impression molds), textiles and paper (e.g. coatings). For these applications, an estimated 400,000 tonnes of silicones were produced in 1991
